My MPhil dissertation examined consequences of humiliation for self esteem and group identification among Dalits. Contrary to earlier speculations, I found that humiliation does not lower self esteem (both personal and collective). Dalit participants responded to humiliation by increasing solidarity with the ingroup which certainly has implications for collective action. So there is indication that humiliation can lead to collective action but HOW? that's the question for my PhD project.
