About

I'm interested in all aspects of Iranian history, but particularly post-Revolutionary historiography. Bizarrely, given the attention still paid to the revolution of 1979, there is a huge deficit in attention being paid by historians to post-revolutionary Iran, and the 1980s in particular stand out as ignored despite the availability of some excellent documentary sources.

At the moment, I'm looking into Iranian histories of the Iran-Iraq War, and the way in which the memory of that war is politically contested today. This ranges from portrayals in official histories, through historical dramas on state television, to the re-burial of martyrs in Iran's universities.

This ties into my broader interest in right-wing Iranian political thought, particularly the revolutionary modernism which ran through the writings of many key twentieth century figures, and the official ideology of both Pahlavi and Islamic states. I believe that the continuity here is often overlooked in favour of the secular vs. religious dichotomy.

Anyone working on the Iran-Iraq war, on contested memories of war, or on Iranian historiography is more than welcome to contact me either through this site or the University of St Andrews Institute for Iranian Studies.
