Thesis Title: The Affect of Trait and State factors on Overgeneralised Autobiographical Memories: Implications for the development of trauma symptoms

About

Previous research indicates that specific groups, affected by depression or trauma symptoms find it more difficult to recall event specific autobiographical events (Williams, 2007). This difficulty has been associated with poorer social problem solving, increased risk of suicidality (Williams & Dritschel, 1988), relapse into depression (Brittlebank, 1993) and development of trauma symptoms (Byrant and Guthrie, 2007). An example of an event specific personal memory would be ‘last Friday I went to the cinema’. Given that previous studies show that autobiographical memories are influenced by personality (Barclay, 1993: Singer & Salovey, 1993) and mood (Teasdale and Barnard, 1993), this thesis considers how these factors interact to produce a difficulty in recalling event specific memories, and how these factors relate to the development of trauma symptoms.
