About
My thesis is about the Swedish filmmaker Hasse Ekman, who made films between 1940 and 1965 but had his creative peak between 1942 and 1953. The thesis will discuss his work in relation to Swedish cinema and Swedish society, especially during the 1940s, and contrast his work with that of Ingmar Bergman, his arch-rival. In the 40s Ekman was the better filmmaker, in the mid 50s Bergman took of and Ekman gave up. By doing this the thesis aims for two things, besides presenting Ekman to the world. First to shine a light on the almost completely forgotten Swedish cinematic renaissance beginning in the mid 1940s, and secondly to discuss and challenge ideas about authorship and auteurs, to go beyond the "auteur theory" (if there's ever been such a thing) and the more recent, but equally questionable, idea of "auteur cinema" as an equivalent of "art cinema" (also a questionable term).
