Faculty Member, Film Studies
Senior Lecturer in Film Studies
About
I am interested in world cinemas. I very often approach cinema through philosophy, in particular to explore issues of national and transnational identity.
My primary focus in recent years has been the interface between film and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. I have written two books on this subject. I am now developing a project about world cinemas that utilises Deleuze along with thinkers like Hardt & Negri, Levinas, Quijano and Dussel.
In addition, my work on a diverse range of small cinemas, including several Asian and South American cinemas has led me to develop a project on cinemas from emerging democracies.
My publications include Deleuze Cinema and National Identity (2006), Deleuze Reframed (2008), Scotland: Global Cinema (2009), Deleuze and World Cinemas (2011), and (as editor), Cinema at the Periphery (2010) and Deleuze and Film (2012).
I am on the editorial boards of Film-Philosophy, Deleuze Studies and A/V: The Journal of Deleuzian Studies. I am part of the editorial collective responsible for deleuzecinema.com
